EcoGraf (ASX:EGR) locks down graphite purification tech in the US

July 19, 2023 0 By Rueben Hale

EcoGraf Limited is on its way to commercialising its HFfree technology by securing a patent for its unique hydrofluoric acid-free purified graphite production method.

The patent was filed on November 1st, 2022 and granted on July 18th, 2023, as a U.S. Patent, protecting the patented methodology until approximately May 2041.

This environmentally compliant technology aligns with the U.S. Treasury IRA guidance on new clean vehicle credit criteria to strengthen critical mineral supply chains.

EcoGraf’s Managing Director, Andrew Spinks, said discussions with a lithium-ion battery and E.V. manufacturers are progressing.

He notes that the U.S. Patent has increased interest and significant strategic value as any products made using this patented process (patented in the U.S.) will infringe upon import into the United States.

“The method offers an alternative purification technology for the manufacturer of battery anode material used in lithium-ion batteries, and the patent also protects the use of the technology in lithium-ion battery anode recycling,” Mr Spinks said.

“This is particularly important as battery recycling is now recognised as a critical component in the transition to clean energy, with increasing requirements in the E.U. and U.S. to achieve more remarkable recycling.”

EcoGraf’s HFfree™

HFfree technology was developed in Australia in 2017 and has since undergone extensive testing and analysis in Australia, Europe, and Asia.

“The Company has lodged patents and trademarks in all key battery markets to protect the I.P. associated with this process. Under its Patent Convention Treaty (PCT) filing, patent submissions have also been made in all key planned battery manufacturing hubs, including the E.U., Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, East Africa, South Africa, and Australia.

About EcoGraf

EcoGraf is building a vertically integrated battery anode materials business to produce high-purity graphite products for lithium-ion batteries and advanced manufacturing markets. Over US$30 million has been invested to create a beautiful graphite mining and mineral processing business. In Tanzania, the Company is developing the Duma TanzGraphite natural flake graphite business, commencing with the Epanko Graphite Project, to provide a long-term, scalable supply of feedstock for EcoGraf™ battery anode material processing facilities, together with high-quality large flake graphite products for specialised industrial applications. Using its environmentally superior EcoGraf HFfree™ purification technology, the Company will upgrade the flake graphite to produce 99.95%C high-performance battery anode material to supply electric vehicles, batteries and manufacturers in Asia, Europe and North America as the world transitions to clean, renewable energy. Battery recycling is critical to improving supply chain sustainability, and the Company’s successful application of the theEcoGraf™ purification process to recycle battery anode material provides it with a unique ability to support customers to reduce CO2 emissions and lower battery costs.
