Lithium Universe has chosen the Québec-government-owned Bécancour Port as its preferred shipping port in the Canadian province for its planned lithium refinery at Bécancour to process up to 140,000 tonnes of lithium-rich spodumene a year.

The spod would be sourced from within Canada or imported from Brazil, Africa or Australia on ships carrying 10,000 to 30,000 tonnes a vessel for refining and storage.

Lithium Universe‘s decision to opt for the Québec Stevedoring-operated Bécancour Port along St. Lawrence River as its preferred port follows the wrap of its port study designed with identifying the best port for spod import to its planned lithium refinery, located alongside in Bécancour.

Trois-Rivières, Sorel, Québec and Montreal ports were also evaluated in the study which compared the project’s spod import logistic requirements with infrastructure, specific capabilities, and equipment of each target port in the province of Québec.

Spod would be transported to the company’s planned Bécancour Lithium Refinery by road, with the study also factoring in typical transport risks and challenges, including managing dust emissions, regulatory regimes, worker and community safeguarding, and environmental concerns.

Western Australia-based Lithium Universe is now holding early discussions with Québecan port officials on expanding and upgrading the port’s capacity to prepare it for the company’s planned trade in spod and lithium.

“Preliminary ongoing discussions regarding the expansion of the terminal emphasize the port’s acknowledgement of the evolving needs of its growing customer base in the region,” Lithium Universe said today.

“The preliminary discussions extend to acquiring specialised equipment, particularly bulk unloading equipment, tailored to the requirements of various companies establishing a presence in the Bécancour Industrial Park.”

Bécancour can host about 200 ships a year and currently manages more than 3.6 million tonnes of cargo annually.

Lithium Universe plans to open its refinery at a preferred site at Bécancour Industrial Park, a site already secured with an options agreement.

The company’s Chairman Iggy Tan has described the site with expansion capacity in an attractive emerging battery-focused jurisdiction featuring low-cost hydroelectricity, high environmental standards and an educated workforce.
